The holidays in Banff are unforgettable. In its winter form, the townsite looks like a real-life postcard — twinkling lights, bluebird skies and fresh, sparkling snow add a magical quality to the mountain scenery. It’s a wonderland steeped in holiday spirit, and there are plenty of opportunities to make memories with loved ones. Ready to start planning your holiday getaway in Banff? Here are our picks to help you capture the magic.

Experience a Mountaintop Christmas

Kick off the holidays at the Banff Gondola. Starting November 16, we’re celebrating the season with a Very Vintage Mountaintop Christmas, complete with timeless activities for all ages. Take in the view from the top of Sulphur Mountain while sipping a hot drink and decorating cookies or holiday ornaments. Guests can also snap photos at the selfie station, try the elf-name generator or even leave a letter for Santa. Mountaintop Christmas runs on Saturdays and Sundays until January 1. Plus, kids ride the gondola free before noon with the purchase of an adult ticket.

Take a Sleigh Ride

If you’ve ever dreamed of living out a real-life Christmas carol, this is for you. Banff Trail Riders will have you dashing through the snow and exploring Banff’s mountain meadows from a horse-drawn sleigh — whether it’s a private family excursion or a romantic ride for two. Warm blankets are provided for an extra-cozy experience, and some packages even include s’mores.

Ice Skate on a Frozen Lake

There’s nothing quite like skating on a frozen lake surrounded by snow-covered mountain peaks. Outdoor ice skating is a quintessential Banff experience, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned skater. Lake Louise is one of the most iconic skating locations, and you can rent skates if needed. Other popular skating spots include Lake Minnewanka, Vermilion Lakes, Two Jack Lake and Johnson Lake. December and January are two of the best months to skate on the larger lakes. Remember to always check the ice thickness before venturing out!
